2018 Good Fight Pinot Gris
Alsatian Style Gris
Pinot gris is a mutation of Pinot noir, originating from the Burgundy region. "Pinot" meaning pine and "gris" meaning grey in French describes this varietals characteristics on the vine as the grey pinecone. Pinot gris is known for two distinct styles, the Italian grigio style, light, crisp with citrus notes versus the full-bodied and ripe notes of the French expression.
The vineyard it surrounded by a wooden lot within the Leelanau Peninsula AVA. The vineyard is hand-tended using high standard canopy management practices to ensure the highest quality of grapes.
The adjustments were made because of how vegetative that block wants to be. We felt it would ripen more evenly and set better if it was riding on 4 canes. 2018 was a fairly light crop. that vintage we gave it 3 hours skin contact and stopped the fermentation at 0.4 brix to give it some volume. it spent 4 months time passively on lees.
Our Gris acid levels are a little higher for an Alsatian style, but the pH is a bit higher due to extended lees aging which adds to its medium body and along with the palate it more truly emulates the Gris style.
